KCTCS regents enhance service to Central KY, rename Maysville college
SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (February 20, 2004) – The Board of Regents of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System took action on Friday to enhance the development of a comprehensive two-year college serving the Lexington area.
The regents, meeting at the Jefferson Community College campus in Shelbyville, also approved a new name for the KCTCS college based in Maysville and authorized new academic programs for other colleges.
The board approved several new programs for Central Kentucky Technical College, including the associate in arts and associate in science programs. Those programs represent the college's first offerings of liberal arts, university transfer programs. The programs are now offered in all KCTCS college districts.
The board also authorized two new associate in applied science programs for Central Kentucky Technical College -- in information technology and electronics technology.
“Lexington is one of the key economic areas of the state," said Michael B. McCall, system president. “We are pleased to be able to expand our program offerings to residents of the region."
The board also heard a report on another possible future enhancement of education in the Lexington area. University of Kentucky Provost Michael T. Nietzel updated regents on the UK Board of Trustees' recent recommendation to the General Assembly that administration of the Lexington Community College be transferred to KCTCS.
In other action, the board approved:
An associate in applied science program in biotechnology for Owensboro Community and Technical College.
Certificate programs to be offered by the following colleges: Big Sandy, Central Kentucky, Elizabethtown, Hazard, Henderson, Hopkinsville, Jefferson, Madisonville, Maysville, Rowan, Somerset, and West Kentucky.
Candidates for credentials at KCTCS colleges. The candidates are in line to receive certificates, diplomas or associate degrees.
A new name for the institution that comprises the former Maysville Community College and Rowan Technical College -- Maysville Community and Technical College.
A new name for the student commons building at Somerset Community College -- the Harold Rogers Student Commons. Rogers represents the 5th Congressional District in Congress, including Somerset. He was instrumental in obtaining more than $8.5 million to build the student commons.
