KCTCS president elected chair-elect of AACC board

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 14, 2004) - Michael B. McCall, president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), is chair-elect of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors.

The election was held during the April board meeting held in conjunction with the 84th annual AACC convention in Minneapolis, Minn.

McCall is the first system-level president to be elected as chair of the AACC board. He will serve as chair-elect through June 30, 2005, and then will become chair in 2005-2006.

Over the last four decades, AACC has become the leading proponent and the national “voice for community colleges.”

AACC’s membership represents close to 95 percent of all accredited U.S. two-year community, junior, and technical colleges and their 10.5 million students, as well as a growing number of international members in Puerto Rico, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. The colleges compose the largest and fastest-growing sector of U.S. higher education, enrolling close to half of all U.S. undergraduates.

Chief executive officer and founding president of Kentucky’s comprehensive community and technical college system, McCall oversees a system that has an annual budget of approximately $480 million.

KCTCS is a seamless complex system of 62 campuses open or under construction operating in 16 regions across the Commonwealth that touches the lives of more than 300,000 citizens.

The founding president of KCTCS, McCall has served for over 35 years in community and technical colleges. He has been recognized for his advanced collaborative partnerships, economic development, innovative use of technology, and the utilization of team-oriented management.

In addition to his role as president, McCall serves on a number of national and state boards and commissions, including serving as chair-elect of the National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges (NCSDCC).

McCall will assume the duties of chair of NCSDCC in August 2004. Affiliated with the American Association of Community Colleges, NCSDCC is the only council that represents the collective interest of state agencies and state boards of community colleges.

In addition, McCall serves on the following boards and commissions:

  • Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher’s Blue Ribbon Commission;
  • the editorial board of the Community College Journal of Research and Practice;
  • the advisory board of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning;
  • national chair of the State Directors Commission and co-chair of the Futures Commission White Paper for the 2004 Community College Futures Assembly; and
  • a member of the board of the Center for Quality People and Organization.

    Recently he was awarded the Presidential Medallion from Murray (Kentucky) State University.

    KCTCS colleges change lives by providing academic and technical associate degrees; diploma and certificate programs in occupational fields; pre-baccalaureate education; adult, continuing and developmental education; customized training for business and industry; and distance learning.
