KCTCS colleges kick off Black History Month activities
Art, music, film, poetry readings and nationally recognized speakers are among the many activities planned in celebration of Black History Month at Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) campuses across the state.
A complete listing of KCTCS-sponsored activities follows. Activities are subject to change. Contact the sponsoring college with any questions. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free and open to the public.
Feb. 1-28: Art Exhibit: "My Africa", by Lexington artist Ruth Hunt Wood, Mon.-Fri., 8 am-4:30 pm, in the Strunk Learning Center at Somerset Community College.
Feb. 3: Video Series: "Harriet Tubman", 12:15 pm. College Drive Campus, Ashland Community and Technical College.
Feb. 3: Lecture: By educational consultant and inspirational speaker Carl Boyd, 11 am, Clemens Fine Arts Center, West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Paducah.
Feb. 5: Film: "Mighty Times: the Legacy of Rosa Parks", 2:30 pm, in the Harold Rogers Student Commons at Somerset Community College.
Feb. 6: "The African-American Read-In Chain", featuring selections from Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Octavia Butler, 3:30 pm, in the Harold Rogers Student Commons at Somerset Community College.
Feb. 7-10: Film Series Tribute: Fields' Auditorium, Maysville Campus, Maysville Community and Technical College.
Feb. 7: Music from the Kentucky State University Choir, 7 pm, in the Fine Arts Center at Henderson Community College.
Feb. 7: "Remembering the Past ... Shaping the Future" reception, 6 pm at the New Greater Love Church, sponsored by West Kentucky Community and Technical College.
Feb. 8: Video Series: "Martin Luther King Jr.", 12:15 pm. College Drive Campus, Ashland Community and Technical College.
Feb. 8: "Black History Gospel Night", 7 pm, at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center in downtown Ashland. Sponsored by Ashland Community and Technical College.
Feb. 8: "Keepers of the Dream: a Gospel Musical", 7 pm, at the First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church Scholarship Committee and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.
Feb. 9: Lecture: "White Tolerance and Black Experience", presented by Dr. Michael Washington, director of Afro-American studies and professor of history at Northern Kentucky University, 12-1 pm, at the Highland Heights Campus of Gateway Community and Technical College.

Feb. 23: Lecture: "An Open Discussion of African American Culture", by Hensley Jemmott, vice president, NAACP Northern Kentucky, 12-1 pm, at the Highland Heights Campus of Gateway Community and Technical College.

Feb 24: "1st Annual African-American Leadership Breakfast", recognizing African-American citizens who have had a positive impact through role modeling or leadership, 9 am, Anderson Campus, Central Kentucky Technical College, nomination deadline Feb.11.
Feb. 24: Panel Discussion: "The Power of Words", 3:30 pm, in the Harold Rogers Student Commons at Somerset Community College.
Feb. 25: "A Tsunami of Compassion: Affrilachian Poets Benefit Reading", a special poetry reading from Frank X. Walker and the Affrilachian Poets, 7 pm, in the Administration Building at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.
Feb. 26: Lecture: "Turning Obstacles into Opportunities: an Appalachian Upbringing", featuring nationally recognized speaker Dr. Aaron Thompson, 11 am, at the Prestonsburg Campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College.
Feb. 28: The 16th Annual "African-American Read-In Chain", 7 pm, at the Embry Chapel in Elizabethtown. Sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.
