he Board of Regents of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System has approved guidelines for the development of the 1998-99 budget.
The guidelines call for employees of the Kentucky Tech postsecondary technical institutions to receive 5 percent salary increases next fiscal year. The employees would have received the same increase had they stayed in state government.
Also, employees of the University of Kentucky Community College System are in line for at least a 3 percent salary increase pool, although budget officials are trying to dedicate even more money to raises. UKCCS faculty and staff received raises this fiscal year that averaged 10 percent.
At their meeting March 18-19 at Henderson Community College, the regents also:
n Expressed appreciation to Kentucky Tech Jefferson Campus and Jefferson Community College for their participation in a project to provide education and training to employees of United Parcel Service (UPS).
n Approved a resolution stating their support for language in the state budget that promotes cooperation in the construction and management of regional postsecondary education centers.
n Approved a resolution supporting language in the state budget that values the work of both staff and faculty.
n Heard a report on the structure of the Office of the President. The first three permanent employees are Sandy Gubser, vice president of administrative affairs; Beverly Haverstock, legal counsel/EEO coordinator; and Bryan Armstrong, director of communications. These interim appointments were announced: Dr. Nelson Grote, executive vice president; Patsy Stice, assistant to Grote; Beth Hilliard, assistant to Interim President James R. Ramsey; Dr. Sue Moore, vice president of academic affairs and planning; Dr. Ron Moore, vice president for information technology; and Steve Milburn, assistant vice president for student affairs.

From Hazard Community College: The Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky has named an interim director, Tom Cravens of Hazard, who will begin meeting with area school districts.  Hazard is one of four sites worldwide participating in the project, which allows students to learn science and math by participating in a mock space shuttle launch.
From Owensboro Community College: Recently the college received a grant in conjunction with the Green River Resource and Development Council to receive 1,700 trees. Some 1,200 will be planted in the Outdoor Classroom; area fourth-graders will help pot the other 500.
