Three finalists meet KCTCS

Board, constituents
review candidates
for KCTCS president

pproximately 100 faculty, staff, administrators, students and board members from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System met recently with these three candidates for the system's first permanent president:
n Dr. Michael McCall, executive director of the South Carolina State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education.
n Dr. Barry Russell, executive vice president and chief operating officer, North Carolina Community College System.
n Dr. Jerry Young, president of the Chaffey Community College District in California.
The KCTCS Board of Regents Presidential Search Committee forwarded the names of Young, Russell and McCall to the full board. The board interviewed the three at the Anderson Campus of Central Kentucky Technical College on Nov. 17, one day after the candidates met with constituents.
"I am delighted at the quality of the candidates we will present to constituents and the public," said Martha C. Johnson, chairman of the Board of Regents. "All of them are well-

grounded in community college and technical college education, and any of them would be able to carry on the outstanding leadership provided by Jim Ramsey and Jeff Hockday," the two interim presidents who have served KCTCS.
Here's a closer look at the three candidates:
Russell is responsible for providing day-to-day management of the North Carolina Community College System's central office. The system includes 58 community colleges and one technology center, and annually serves almost 800,000 students.
Russell previously served as president of Southwestern Community College, Sylva, N.C.; and in a variety of positions, including vice president for educational affairs, at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, S.C.
Russell earned his bachelor's degree in industrial education,

his master's degree in industrial education, and his doctorate in vocational-technical education with an emphasis on administration, all from Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.
Russell told constituents that his first priorities as president would be to simultaneously initiate a strategic planning process, solidify support for KCTCS out in the state, and identify processes that need to be developed or improved.
Young has served as president of Chaffey Community College District for 12 years. Chaffey is a comprehensive community college with an enrollment of more than 18,000 credit and noncredit students and a budget of more than $60 million.
