"Work and Learn" is a new initiative and expansion of the Ready-to-Work Program that began in July 2003. The same array of services offered to KCTCS college students is offered to Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (K-TAP) recipients who are enrolled in adult basic education classes. These services include a work experience opportunity that enables the individual to determine future career options and opportunities. The eligibility requirements for Work and Learn are that the individual be a present K-TAP recipient, within a year of obtaining a General Education Diploma (GED) and planning to attend a Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) college. Additionally, the program serves individuals who already have a high school diploma or GED who need academic remediation before attending college. Work and Learn Case Managers are located on KCTCS college campuses in all 16 of the KCTCS college districts. These Work and Learn Case Managers collaborate with Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE) Providers and the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) Case Managers to recruit, assess, support, and transition the K-TAP recipients; provide mentoring, counseling, job development, and job placement and assist students in accessing additional services from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and other community resources.
