Carrie CharlesHello, my name is Carrie Charles and I would like to share my Ready to Work story with you. I am a 24 year old single mother with a seven year old child who has been my foundation and inspiration. I enrolled at Prestonsburg Community College but my future appeared narrow until I was informed of Ready-to-Work. When I first began to participate in the RTW work-study program, I was hesitant due to my lack of self-confidence and work experience. However, after being placed at the Department for Community Based Services in Pikeville, Kentucky, I began to have confidence in my abilities and desired to achieve not just my goals but my dreams.Participating in RTW allows single parents the opportunity to work in their communities. The program helps K-TAP recipients become self-sufficient and helps students realize that they can do better and will do better. Ready-to-Work not only offers students job opportunities and networking abilities, but something every person needs, money. I know from experience how frustrating and difficult it is to live on a very small income. There were many times that I wouldn't have made it to the next month without the income earned from the work-study program. I am proud that I took advantage of Ready-to-Work. With the help of the program, along with the coordinator, Billie Jean Cole, I am now a Family Support Specialist (caseworker). I owe many thanks to my case manager, David Runyon, for informing me of going back to school and Mrs. Cole for all her dedication and help. Now, being a caseworker myself, I will have the opportunity to help motivate others due to my successful transition from college to work. Read other Ready-to-Work Student Stories |
