ELIGIBILITY

The Four Chapters of the GI Bill That Are Eligible for Education Benefits:

Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty

Requirements:
- First time enlistment of armed forces/ active duty on or after July 1, 1985*
- High school graduate or completed GED
- Pay reduced by $100 a month for the first 12 months of active duty

Application:
- Complete and submit VA Form 22-1990
- Submit Copy of DD-214

* Consult VA for other eligibility.

Chapter 32 Post-Vietnam Era Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)

Requirements:  
- Participated in voluntary, contributory matching program set up for those entering armed forces between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985  
- Active duty service of at least 24 months

Application:

Complete and submit VA Form 22-1990  
- Submit Copy of DD-214

 

Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (including National Guard)

Requirements:
-
Reservist enlisted/re-enlisted for six years after October 1, 1990
- High school graduate or completed GED
- Completed initial active duty for training

Application:
- Contact reserve unit to verify eligibility
- Complete and submit VA Form 22-1990
- Submit DD-2384 (Notice of Basic Eligibility)

Chapter 35 Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program

Beneficiary:
- Child or spouse of a veteran who has a 100 percent, service-related disability
- Child or widow whose parent’s/ spouse’s death was service-related

Application:

Complete and submit VA Form 22-5490

Veterans, servicepersons, reservists (including national guard), and dependents of disabled and deceased veterans mail either U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) or their Application for Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (VA Form 22-5490) to:
